In Extended Minimalism Vol. 1, Kevin Reveyrand brings together low-register instruments to create a subtle and bold sound universe. Between contemporary jazz and minimalist writing, the bassist asserts a unique voice.
With Extended Minimalism Vol. 1, Kevin Reveyrand signs a sonic manifesto as demanding as it is sensitive. The bassist, faithful to his long-term exploratory approach, unfolds increasingly assertive writing, free from stylistic constraints. Around his bass, he assembles a singular instrumental palette made of low-frequency instruments — baritone saxophone, tuba, cello — to reveal an unsuspected clarity.
The project is based on a principle as simple as it is daring: a series of trios, each enriched either with a string quartet (delicately arranged by Khalil Chahine ) or with percussion. This alternation structures the album into nine pieces, all shaped around an intimate dialogue between timbres. Notable figures appear: Céline Bonacina and her charismatic baritone sax, Thomas Leleu and his lyrically expressive tuba, Isabelle Sajot on introspective cello, and Stéphane Edouard as a rhythmic pathfinder.
The album’s title evokes minimalism, but here it is an extended, inhabited, and ever-expanding minimalism. A way to reach the essential without forgoing complexity or emotion. Tracks like Pierrot, Until It’s Gone, or Reason and Heart are filled with a strong narrative breath. The bass acts as foundation, melodic guide, and breathing space. Rather than imposing itself, it inspires, evokes, and dialogues.
In Reveyrand, one feels the desire to merge disciplines, to make scholarly music converse with improvisation, jazz with chamber music, rhythm with contemplation. Recorded in December 2024 between Montmartre Recording and UFO Studio, the album benefits from a clear production, signed by the mastermind himself, with elegant mastering by Simon Lancelot.
Extended Minimalism Vol. 1 is an album that rewards attentive listening. It is demanding, certainly, but in return offers a rich, coherent, luminous world — the reflection of a musician who, between prestigious collaborations (from Robben Ford to Billy Cobham ), pursues a personal, sincere, and deeply human journey.
A bassist’s album that transcends its instrument to embrace a complete musical vision. Deep, precise, rare.
Not to be missed. Album release scheduled for late September 2025.
