Musical practice places intense demands on the body. Posture, repetition, and stress can cause pain or imbalance. Osteopathy, through a holistic approach, supports musicians in maintaining mobility and precision of movement.
At first glance, an osteopathic consultation for a musician is quite similar to that of any other patient: anamnesis (medical interview), diagnostic exclusion tests, osteopathic tests, and treatment.
However, special attention will be paid to the patient’s instrumental practice.
Naturally, the osteopath must have medical knowledge and be able to refer the patient to other professionals when necessary (physiotherapist / podiatrist / doctor, neurologist…).
For a complete and coherent management of the patient, medical and paramedical professionals should work as closely together as possible.
Whether amateur or professional, it is certain that a musician places significant demands on their body. Depending on the frequency of practice and the technical difficulty of the instrument, the performer will adapt as best as possible to avoid imbalances or even injuries.
This is the main purpose of osteopathic care for musicians: to prevent discomforts related to regular instrument practice and thus maintain or even enhance performance.
Preventive care:
Especially when starting a new practice: beginners or those lacking technique tend to develop tension; the goal is to correct poor postures that may appear in this context.
In preparation for competitions: to maintain postural balance and also work on tensions related to stress about the upcoming event (breathing, recovery after effort, posture and balance, mindset).
Curative care:
In cases of musculoskeletal tension or injury, in collaboration with a physiotherapist, for comprehensive care.
After a trauma (impact, fall, accident) or a surgery, to restore mobility.
The list could go on…
A musician may also seek consultation for other reasons unrelated to their practice that could still affect their playing (emotional, surgical intervention…).
The consultation frequency depends on the patient’s goals.
It will be adjusted according to their needs.
Ultimately, the osteopathic care of musicians is quite comparable to that of athletes, whether amateur or professional.
