In the 1980s and 1990s, under the direction of Bill Schultz, Fender made a return to quality. The relaunch of the Custom Shop in 1987 offered high-end models with strict vintage specifications, and the American Vintage reissues adhered to original dimensions and materials, including nitrocellulose, a vintage 7.25" radius, narrow frets, and cloth wire wiring. The American Standard and then American Professional lines combined respect for tradition with modern innovations, such as noiseless pickups, a compound radius, medium-jumbo frets, and locking tuners.
Today, Fender continues to select high-quality woods, such as alder, light ash, or figured maple. The pickups use Alnico V or III magnets and can be wound according to vintage specifications or modernized with noiseless technology. CTS potentiometers, film capacitors, and robust wiring with full shielding ensure reliable electronics. Some modern bass models, such as the Ultra or Elite series, feature low-impedance preamps with three-band equalizers and active circuits for maximum tonal versatility.
